Isn&#8217;t keeping quiet one of those skills we already know, at least since we got caught speaking out in grammar school?<\/p>\n<p>Actually, no.<\/p>\n<p>Silence, <em>real<\/em> silence, is something quite precious, and like most things of value, can be rare and fleeting. It is a thing to be treasured, like a hidden jewel.<\/p>\n<p>It suggests a calm center, an absence of ego, and a wholly present state of mind.\u00a0 It is, in other words, essential to the practice of budo.<\/p>\n<p>And for the pedants out there\u2014I am, of course, referring to my fellow conspirators on the mat\u2014it reminds us to <em>listen<\/em>, not just to our teachers, and our partners, but to our technique as well.\u00a0 What is it that nage is trying to do?\u00a0 What is uke telling me?<\/p>\n<p>And lastly it suggests, courtesy of our friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aikidocenterofjacksonville.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/the-more-things-change\/\">Hoshin<\/a>, that we not take ourselves too seriously.<\/p>\n<p>On behalf of Sensei, welcome to our blog.
